The Standards Connection: A National Perspective

How Will I Know How Well My Students  Are Progressing Toward Achieving the Standards?

There are increasing numbers of assessment packages available nationally to help teachers design proficiency-based, standards-based assessment. Three you may want to watch for:

Performance Assessment Units (ACTFL)
The new assessment package that has been under development and piloting for the past several years at ACTFL is nearing completion. Originally entitled PAU’s or Performance Assessment Units, they will be retitled to reflect their roots in the learning-scenario approach to language teaching and learning. These scenarios combine teaching and assessment and enable teachers to use the same materials effectively with a wide range of language abilities and knowledge in their students.   Watch for news at this site about their availability!

Oregon Oral Assessment Practice Kit
If you teach in Oregon or are interested in seeing what is happening in Oregon, you might want to check out the Oregon Oral Assessment Practice Kit. Developed and distributed by the Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching, the kit contains a handbook for classroom use, a training manual tied to the Oregon benchmarks, practice-situation grids and practice-situation cue cards. Available from COFLT at oic@willamette.edu.

Avant Assessment
Avant Assessment provides classroom tools and online assessment services that support proficiency learning in reading and writing for French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Developed at the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS), a National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Oregon, these tools and services cover a full range of needs for classroom teachers, school districts, and institutions of higher education.
