What Is the Lexile
Framework?
The Lexile Framework for
Reading™ is a tool that
links reading ability to the difficulty of texts.
It uses a single scale that
targets readers with text to provide
appropriate reading challenge.
The scale range for most K - 12 students is 200 to 1700. For
instance, the average range for Grade 3 is 330L to 700L. The same
scale has been used to analyze thousands of magazine articles,
books, textbooks, and other pieces of text.
When a student receives a Lexile measure of 1000L, for
example,
this means that he/she should be able
to read a 1000L text, such as The Hobbit, with 75 percent
comprehension.
