The Commission on Student Learning has developed an assessment system to measure student achievement of the Essential Academic Learning Requirements for students in the state of Washington. The state tests, called the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, are administered at grades 4, 7, and 10 and are criterion-referenced.

 Washington Curriculum Matrix Summary - WASL High, Medium, Low Designations

 

Reading and Writing

If the content strand aligned to 3 or more learning targets a High designation was given.  If the content strand aligned to 1 or 2 learning targets, a Medium designation was given.  If the content strand was not identified with any learning targets or was identified as a “classroom-based assessment,” it was given a Low designation.

Mathematics

If the content strand aligned to 3 or more learning targets a High designation was given.  If the content strand aligned to 1 or 2 learning targets, a Medium designation was given.  If the content strand was not identified with any learning targets or was identified as a “classroom-based assessment,” it was given a Low designation.
