Benchmarks Checkpoints at or about grades 3,5,8,and 10 at which a student ’s progress toward the Certificate of Initial Mastery is formally measured.

Performance Standards These standards describe the scores expected of students on state tests and classroom assignments to achieve the benchmarks at grades 3,5,8,and 10.

Oregon tests at the benchmark years of grades 3, 5, 8, 10, and 12. Passing these tests is not required for graduation. Students take criterion-referenced multiple choice tests, which are developed by Oregon teachers and State Department staff. There are about 70 knowledge and skills reading/literature questions and about 50 knowledge and skills questions each in mathematics, science and social sciences. Students also take an on-demand-writing test and on-demand math problem-solving test in grades 5, 8, and 10. Students may also substitute work samples in writing and mathematics problem solving for test scores that fall below the standard under prescribed conditions.
