Curriculum Matrix Standards Ohio standards are organized as follows: Language Arts and Mathematics - Grades 3,5,8,12; Science and Social Studies - all grades.

There are 3 levels: Level 1 - Standard; Level 2 - Performance Objective; Level 3 - Instructional Objective.

State Assessment Information: There are state tests in the following subjects and grades:
LA, MA, SS, SC - Grades 4,6,9,12.
Ohio Proficiency Tests: High School Graduation Qualifying Examinations (HSGQE), field testing in March 2001; required of students graduating after September 15, 2004; students earning an Ohio diploma must meet the test performance standards; see http://www.ode.state.oh.us/proficiency/

Test Data:

Science—Grades 4 and 6—Tests the four science strands: Nature of Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science and Life Science. Questions consist of short-answer items or extended-response items. Each strand has at least one short-answer or one extended-response item.

Grade 9—The strands tested at grade 9 are: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth/space Science, and Nature of Science. The test consists of 45 multiple-choice questions.

Grade 12—Test takes the same form as the Grade 9 test.

Mathematics—Grades 4 and 6—Tests the eight mathematics strands: Patterns, Relations, and Functions; Problem-Solving Strategies; Numbers and Number Relations; Geometry; Algebra; Measurement; Estimation and Mental Computation; and Data Analysis and Probability. Questions consist of multiple choice, short answer and extended response items.

Grade 9—Consists of 40 multiple-choice items. There is at least one test item to assess each learning outcome. The test questions are distributed over five strands as follows: Arithmetic, Measurement, Geometry, Data Analysis and Algebra.

Grade 12—Consists of 50 questions in the following strands: Arithmetic, Measurement, Data Analysis, Algebra/Functions, and Geometry.

English Language Arts—Reading—Grade 4 consists of 35 items, which contain multiple-choice, short-answer, and extended-response questions. It is defined by 20 learning outcomes.

Grade 6 contains 41 items consisting of multiple-choice, short-answer, and extended-response items. These are defined by 18 learning outcomes.

Grade 9—contains 40 multiple-choice items. Each learning outcome will be assessed with at least one item.

Grade 12—Items are distributed over all 23 learning outcomes. Reading passage will be Fictional (Constructing and Extending Meaning) and Nonfictional (Constructing and Extending Meaning.)

English Language Arts—Writing—Grade 9 writing component of the 9th grade proficiency tests will consist of two writing prompts to which each student will respond by producing original samples of writing. Students will write on both prompts—they will not have a choice of prompts. The students will be asked to respond directly to the prompt using ideas, reasoning, examples, and/or commentary that is pertinent. The prompts are designed to elicit expository, narrative, and descriptive writing.

12-grade writing measures a twelfth-grade level of literacy as defined by the 18 learning outcomes. For instructional purposes, the outcomes can be clustered into four broad categories: content (outcomes 1-2), organization (outcomes 4, 6, and 7), languages outcomes 8-11), ad writing conventions (outcomes 5, 12-18).

 Ohio Curriculum Matrix Summary- Ohio Proficiency Tests High, Medium, Low Designations 

English Language Arts

 For Grades 4, 6, 9, and 12 all strands were equally tested, all Learning Outcomes ranked High.

 Mathematics

 Grade 4 and 6:  If the range of assessment items was 3 - 11 or more, a High designation was given.  If the range of assessment items was 2 -7 to 3 - 9, a Medium designation was given.

 Grade 9:  If the number of assessment items aligned to the Learning Outcome was 10 or higher, a High designation was given.  If the number of assessment items aligned to the Learning outcome was 1 to 9, a Medium designation was given.

 Grade 12:  If the percentage of the test items was 17% or higher, a High designation was given.  If the percentage of the test items was 1 to 16%, a Medium designation was given.

Science

Grades 4 and 6:  If the range of assessment items was 9 - 16 or more, a High designation was given.  If the range of assessment items was  4 -11 to 7 - 14, a Medium designation was given.

Grades 9 and 12:  Based on the percentage of assessment items, the strands are equally tested, all Learning Outcomes ranked High.
