Tech Prep (Technical
Preparation) is national educational reform that
began in 1990 through the Carl D. Perkins
Vocational and Applied Technology Act, a
federally funded program and was then amended in
the School to Work Opportunities Act of 1994.
Tech-Prep has evolved into a program aimed at
articulating up to 4 years of secondary and two
years of postsecondary school programs and
combing the teaching of academic and
occupational skills to promote continued
education and acquisition of advanced technical
skills while helping students make the
transition from school to work.
The Perkins law contains
specific requirements for Tech Prep programs
that many states have managed through the use of
consortiums, but the benefits experienced by
students have made this program a resounding
success.
